Court jails bus driver for indecent assault of student

Listen to this article:

A 35-YEAR-old bus driver convicted of one count of indecent assault has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Nausori Magistrates Court.

While sentencing Rajesh Mani, Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne said this was a case where a school student was indecently assaulted by a sexual predator who was working as the driver in the school bus.

He said a clear message had to be sent out to the other public service transport providers not to engage in any kind of sexual harassment against women and children in this country.

The court heard that when the 16-year-old student got into the school bus, Mani drove the bus into a deserted place instead of taking her to school on March 17, 2017, in Nausori, where he indecently assaulted her.

Magistrate Somaratne said the student was saved from further sexual assault because another bus had come there.

A non-parole period of 14 months has been set.
