THEY huddled among their dirty beddings and clothes waiting for a good Samaritan to bring them their next meal and the much-needed clean drinking water.

This was the condition of sickly couple Veresa Menuki and his wife Kinisimere Civoinono as they shared the prolonged water problem affecting their island home of Galoa.

They said the problem had aggravated their conditions.

Mr Menuki, who suffers from a serious case of gout, said their only daughter had married and moved on to the mainland with her family.

“I am 50 years old and my wife, who is 48 years old, suffers from a rare heart disease and a number of other diseases which has rendered her immobile and bedridden,” he said.

“We are confined to our house and despite asking for assistance from the authorities, we have been told to provide them with countless requirements which we can’t do.

“Sometimes the heat is unbearable and there is no water, making our situation almost unbearable.”

Mr Menuki shed tears as his wife cried out in pain or complained about the heat because there was nothing he could do given his condition.

“I am not giving up yet and I am praying for assistance from anybody out there to relieve us of our suffering.”

If anything, Mr Menuki said, the dry spell and its difficulties had just brought them closer as a couple.
