THE Suva City Council will now have officers focus on monitoring those who litter around the city.
Council CEO Bijay Chand said the council was in the process of recruiting up to six litter prevention officers.
“We have advertised for the positions and at the moment, we are in the process of reviewing the applications before we make decisions,” Mr Chand said.
“It is still in the process but once finalised, these officers will focus on going out around Suva especially in the parks and other public areas and monitor the public to find those littering.”
Mr Chand said in the past, this was the responsibility of the health inspectors who would hand out fines to people caught littering.
“But these people already have a lot to focus on so we did not really address this issue properly in the past.”
The council hopes to strengthen the implementation of the Litter Decree through these anti-litter officers.
