Council to look for new games hosts

THE Pacific Games council will now be looking for a new host of the 2019 Pacific games after Tonga officially withdrew from hosting the event.
According to Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympics Committee CEO-secretary general Lorraine Mar said Tonga had officially withdrawn from hosting.
“They were given until June 30 to change their minds,” Mar said.
Youth and Sports Minister Laisenia Tuitubou had earlier said it wouldn’t be a good idea for Fiji to host the next Pacific Games.
“We cannot afford to rush in and host the games because we don’t have the facility and we need to upgrade the ones that we have,” Tuitubou said.
He said 2027 would be the best time for Fiji to host another.
“We can have the budget but to prepare it for a short lapse of time is not convenient.
“We’re well known for hosting two games because we had the time and money to prepare so we’re looking towards that period of time so that we can organise it well.”
According to PacNews Tonga’s Parliament repealed the Pacific Games Organising Act earlier last week.
