Missing receipts worth $36,521 from the 2019 Rakiraki Carnival has forced the Rakiraki Town Council to refer the matter to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

This is stated in the 2019-2020 Audit Report on Municipal Councils by the Auditor-General tabled in Parliament last Thursday.

“Every council shall keep proper accounts and records which shall be kept (in accordance with the accounting standards approved by the Fiji Institute of Accounts) in such manner as may be directed by the minister,” stated the OAG.

“The council did not provide the receipts, payments vouchers, and invoices to substantiate the income received totalling $36,521 and expenses incurred totalling $3202 in relation to the carnival account.

“The council informed us that the matter has been referred to FICAC for further investigation.

“It is recommended that all proceeds from future carnivals should be banked on a daily basis and proper records are maintained.”
