MORE than 160 underprivileged children including those with special needs were hosted to a Diwali celebration with a difference at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka on Wednesday.
Fiji Girmit Council administrator Hemita said the children were entertained and given refreshments in a bid to spread the spirit of joy and happiness that is associated with Diwali.
“It is a celebration of good over evil so we thought what better way to mark Diwali than to make it a special event for many who would not have the means to spend money on special food, sweets and entertainment,” she said.
“This is an annual event and we normally invite members of the community to attend but this time around we thought it best to bring poor and needy children and to focus our efforts entirely on them.
“The Fiji Girmit Council provided refreshments and entertainment came from students of classical music and dance at the centre.”
Ms Hemita said the children were from Lautoka Special School, Sunshine Special School and the Western Disabled Persons Association.
