Corruption lands former CWM hospital staff in jail

Listen to this article:

A former employee of CWM hospital who admitted to falsifying a receipt and causing a loss of $54.40 to the hospital was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment by the Suva Magistrates Court this week.

Samuela Wainibuli was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) last December for falsifying the duplicate and triplicate copies of a Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS) receipt which resulted in the loss of $54.50 to the MOHMS.

Chief magistrate Usaia Ratuvili said the offence was a serious breach of trust and the offence showed some prior planning.

He said although the amount taken was small, the principle of the accused’s actions had farreaching consequences. Wainibuli will serve one month in custody and the remaining nine months suspended for three years.

The magistrate said the accused must spend some time in custody to send a deterrent message to him and other like-minded offenders.
