Cookbook globally recognised

THE Ministry of Health supported cookbook, Khana Kakana, has been globally recognised as one of the world’s best health and nutritional guides in 2015.

The book came in second place under the Health and Nutrition category during the 2015 Gourmand Cookbook Awards in Frankfurt, Germany.

Fiji also won an award for Best Photography.

While announcing the achievement in Sigatoka on Thursday, Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar said the cookbook had a unique healthy Fijian flavour made up of recipes by both renowned chefs and locals from around the country who used fresh and affordable ingredients.

“With nutrition advice snippets and gardening tips, the cookbook provides a total diet solution and inspiration for all Fijians,” she said.

“These are efforts that are not only improving the health of Fijians and building pride in our foods but also changing the agricultural and tourism sector as demand for Fijian grown produce increases,

“The ministry hopes that these efforts will instil a sense of pride in Fijian food and encourage more people to choose healthy local foods to prevent developing non-communicable diseases.”

Fiji competed against 205 other countries and made it into the 92 entries. The final decision was made after the country was pitted against seven finalists which included Canada, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Oman, Netherlands and Sweden.
