Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua has given his assurance that Fijian troops in the Middle East, especially near the Gaza and Israel, are safe and contingency plans are in place if the conflict between Hamas and Israel escalates.

This comes as former military commander and FijiFirst parliamentarian Viliame Naupoto raised his concerns about plans, if any, for Fiji troops stationed in the strife-torn region.

Mr Naupoto said he has been tracking the war in recent days and awaiting assurance from the Government as to what would happen to Fiji troops should the situation in the region worsens.

Mr Naupoto said Fiji had troops near the Gaza border, Egypt, Golan Heights, Syria and Iraq.

He said Australia had deployed military aircraft to countries in the Middle East as a standby measure and it would be good for Suva and Canberra to discuss plans on pulling out our troops if the conflict escalated.

In response, Mr Tikoduadua said he had met with the RFMF Commander who assured him that Fiji troops in Lebanon, Syria, Jerusalem, Iraq and Sinai were safe.

He said contingency plans were in place in the event the conflict escalates.
