Concerns over leptospirosis cases

Listen to this article:

Leptospirosis cases in the Western and the Central divisions are above the outbreak threshold, says Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

In a statement, he said it was concerning that leptospirosis cases in the Western Division had remained above the outbreak threshold consistently this year.

“In the Western Division, there is a downward trend, however, it is a concern that leptospirosis in the Western Division has remained above the outbreak threshold consistently this year,” he said.

However, Dr Fong said nationally, admissions and death because of leptospirosis continued on a downward trend.

In regards to typhoid and dengue fever cases, he said it remained below the outbreak and alert thresholds.

“Although we reported a spike in typhoid cases in the Northern Division recently when three cases were reported in a week, typhoid case trends remain below outbreak and alert thresholds.

“Dengue case trends also remain below outbreak and alert thresholds.”
