Fiji Volleyball Association’s vice-president Umesh Chand has described the Fiji Bitter Wairiki Volleyball competition as a platform that develops young players.
With more teams joining the sport every year at the competition, Chand said it was interesting to see younger players participate.
“We have more young people playing in teams that travel not only from Viti Levu, but from Labasa as well,” he said.
“This year for the first time a team of young players including secondary school students from Labasa participated and they defeated last year’s champion Raiwai Rebels in the pool match.
“This shows that there are good players in the North, but they just need to be assisted and developed well.”
Chand,who was also a game official, said it was time that these young players be assisted to develop their volleyball skills.
“Sports is another way of earning an income and if we help these young players now they can go a long way and achieve great things in this sport of volleyball.”
“In Labasa we have a lot of students playing volleyball and are good players as we see this with the Labasa Service volleyball team. First time for them to participate in this tournament and they defeated last year’s champ so it will be good to develop young players.”
