Using open fi res and gas stoves will soon be a thing of the past for residents of Koroipita, Lautoka.

This after hardware giant Kasabias gave them 262 cook stoves. The stoves were handed to residents at the Koroipita Community Hall recently.

Koroipita residents can use firewood from within the 50-acre property managed by Model Towns Charitable Trust.

Most residents also have calliandra trees in their compound which would now be put into good use as firewood with the new stoves.

Kasabias’ general manager Ajay Chawla said engagement officers had conducted training on how to effectively and safely use the new appliance.

He said they would continue to monitor the effectiveness of the stoves after the distribution exercise to ensure that it had reduced the cost and improved efficiency for the households.

Charitable Model Town trustee and general manager Peter Drysdale said the new stoves would enable residents to spend less time in the kitchen and more time engaging in small enterprises and other constructive activities.

“The stove uses very little firewood and there is a net zero carbon footprint.

“This is in line with the community’s green policies where we use renewable fuels , compost green so called waste and do not allow the burning of garbage, especially plastics,” Mr Drysdale said.

A Koroipita resident said, the stove was light, portable and easy to use.

“We can save a lot of money and there is very little smoke emitted from the stove.”
