Fostering a healthy mind, body and spirit are all qualities of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medicine system that focuses on wellbeing.

This was the message relayed by Acting Indian High Commissioner Saifullah Khan on the occasion of Ayurveda Day marked by the Commission in Suva on Friday.

Mr Khan said the day was started in 2016 to nationalise the system of medicine and to make it global.

“It is celebrated to create awareness among today’s generation and promote the Ayurvedic approach of healing in our daily lives,” he said.

“Ayurveda is perceived as one of the most ancient, well-documented systems of medicine and equally relevant in modern times.”

According to Mr Khan, Ayurveda was welldocumented in text and practice even in this day and age.

“Knowledge of Ayurveda allows one to understand the balance of body, mind and consciousness according to one’s own individual constitution and how to make lifestyle changes to maintain this balance.” He said when combined with practices like yoga, people could keep themselves fit physically and spiritually.

“Ayurvedic treatment does not include any chemical products, which means it is made of completely natural elements.”

As part of the celebration, students of yoga classes at the commission demonstrated various techniques they had learned to keep fit mentally and physically.
