VILLAGERS of Rabi Island have found a new way of earning income daily.
Thanks to the newly-opened Banaban Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) factory, the villagers now have the opportunity to sell coconuts for 20 cents each to the facility on a weekly basis.
Factory representative Terikano Takesau yesterday said they visited the four villages daily to buy coconuts.
“This trade has encouraged the villagers to produce more coconuts for sale. A lot of the villagers earn more than $100 and this money has helped them put food on the table and pay for other expenses.”
She said villagers also started planting young coconut trees to replace the senile ones.
“We are buying 360 coconuts daily,” Ms Takesau said.
