Coaches to expand knowledge, develop athletes

ATHLETICS Fiji is on the verge of expanding its knowledge for the better development of athletes through the coaches’ perspectives.

A total of 15 participants from around Fiji attended the 11-day IAAF Coaches Education Certification System Level I coaching workshop from August 12-23.

A joint operation between Athletics Fiji, FASANOC, IAAF, Oceania Athletics and the IOC conducted a two-week coaching workshop that was facilitated by Albert Miller Sr and assistant lecturer Makelesi Bulikiobo.

Former Pacific sprint queen Bulikiobo said the participants were individuals that had the links to develop the younger generation in becoming better and successful athletes in the future.

“The participants consist of teachers, old scholars of various schools, former athletes and physical trainers from all around Fiji,” said Bulikiobo.

During the opening introduction by Miller on the first day, he stressed that the main objective was to have uniform basic coaching principles of grassroots athletics worldwide.

The participants went through practical and classroom work covering the basic knowledge and practical understanding and application of the sport sciences, recognition of the five basic skills of coaching and then application and practice of these skills within their coaching all the while making sure that their focus is to “see” the athlete and make their coaching athlete-centred and appropriately coach-led.

Miller hopes that the knowledge acquired will improve the coaching quality at the grass-root level which in turn will improve the level of athletics all over Fiji.
