THE Fiji Sugar Corporation says it is expecting a total harvest of about 1.73 million tonnes of cane and the production of about 200,000 tonnes of sugar this season.
Speaking at a press conference at FSC headquarters in Lautoka yesterday, chief executive officer Graham Clark said cane production targets of two million tonnes by 2020 and three million by 2022 were achievable.
“Our cane planting initiatives have gone very well,” he said.
“If we go back to the last planting season, we really managed to accelerate the delivery and for the year we had just under 6000 hectares planted which was more than double of what we have done in the last 10 years.”
The 6000 hectares were expected to produce about 360,000 additional tonnes of cane.
“We got to pay special thanks to our farmers because they have worked really hard.
“Our team has provided support and we have seen the results, but that doesn’t mean the job is done.
“We are targeting another 8000ha to be planted in the 2018-2019 planting season.
“We believe it is achievable and in-line with our targets.”
