Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua says there is a probe into “a whole range of people” living in Fiji to determine if they are qualified to hold Fijian passports.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday during debate on the Review of the Office of the Prime Minister and Department of Immigration 2018–2019 Annual Report, he said ministry officials had noted there were a lot of people who said they were citizens and Government was determined to find out how they gained citizenship.

“One other aspect that relates to passports, and I am sure that this is something that’s been listed in one of the agenda items in the days to come,” he said.

“There’s been some concerns about Fijian passports that have been issued to a whole range of people that are now living in Fiji — in terms of whether they are actually qualified to have these passports issued to them and become Fiji citizens.

“When we travel around we see a whole range of people who say they are citizens and have qualified by time.

“So we are doing some research into that to find out how many of those have actually been issued and whether they’ve been issued under proper, under the current laws that are in place for people to follow.”
