Lautoka’s Churchill Park ground one will be closed from next Tuesday for major renovation works. This will include the relocation of the current turf to ground three and the planting of a new turf on the main facility.
Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Mohammed Anees Khan said the idea was to have a training ground which was of international standard. “We are removing the turf from ground one and will plant it on ground number three,” Khan said.
“We will plant new turf on ground one. Ground two will remain as it is currently.
“We weighed things out as a good turf was needed outside the main ground for training.
“Previously training was allowed on the main ground but then it used to disturb our maintenance schedule. This includes cutting the turf, adding fertilizer and watering which is an expensive affair.
“So when we have an option outside with an equally quality turf then it can be used for training and warm-ups like overseas.”
Churchill Park grounds two and three were used for parking for major events in the Sugar City.
However after the renovations, the two grounds will be enclosed.
Khan said parking should not be a problem when hosting major tournaments and international matches.
“We have enough options for parking which is within walking distance to the city,” he said.
“The outside grounds will be enclosed. In the future if the usage of the facility increases then we will put automatic sprinklers as well.
“Right now a manually watering system is being constructed.”
