ISSUES affecting youths was the main focus of discussions during the Catholic youth festival in Suva yesterday.

Pita Waqavonovono, a leader in the Archdiocese Youth Commission, said the focus was on how youths could play a role in their parish communities to assist the work of parish priests and also on how to address youth social issues.

He said discussion was also centred on how youths could implement programs in their communities to assist those faced with social issues such as abuse.

“The church has a lot of programs but unfortunately within the Archdiocese of Suva, it hasn’t been picking up as strong as it is in other countries,” Mr Waqavonovono said.

“So we are hoping that our young people, after what they have learnt here, can go back to their parish and strategically address whatever social issues that is happening in their community using faith formation programs.”

He said the youth festival was also an important event for the church as it focused on empowering and nurturing young people in the church to be able to strengthen their spiritual walk with God.

The Catholic Church will today hold a special thanksgiving mass to mark its second Archdiocesan Synod at the Sacred Heart College grounds.
