APIA, 01 OCTOBER 2018 (SAMOA GOVT) – Acting Samoan Prime Minister Tuitama Dr Leao Talalelei Tuitama has praised China as it celebrates the 69th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
“We congratulate your Government on reaching this significant milestone. It is almost 43 years since Samoa and China established diplomatic relations and during this time Samoa and China have developed close and friendly relations,” lauded Dr Tuitama who is also the Minister of Health.
“The partnership has been realised through development programs that have the improved current infrastructure. Many Samoans have taken up capacity building programs through scholarship and short term courses including deployment of technical expertise in various fields such as agriculture, education, maintenance of sports facilities and health,” continued the Acting Prime Minister.
“I understand we have a total of 102 Samoan Students undertaking degrees in various fields in Universities in China under this assistance. Many have graduated and are contributing to our development.
With the assistance of the Chinese Government, Samoa continues to boast the first class sporting facilities, which will surely be showcased at the upcoming South Pacific Games in 2019.”
He also complimented the Chinese Ambassador to Samoa and his staff.
“We wish to acknowledge the important role assumed by the Chinese Embassy in Apia.
“The Embassy has been instrumental in fostering cooperation between Samoans and Chinese both in the public and private sectors both here and in China.
“I thank Your Excellency Ambassador Wang and Staff for the hard work and continuous efforts in promoting the friendship and good relations between Samoa and China.”
Since Samoa established diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China, the friendship between the two countries has evolved from strength to strength, says China’s Ambassador to Samoa, Wang Xuefeng.
Said the Ambassador in his main address;
“Every little achievement in the China-Samoa friendship could not have been made without the joint efforts of leaders and peoples of both countries. On this auspicious and happy occasion of the National Day of China, I wish to extend my warmest regards to the friendly Samoan people. I also wish to extend my great appreciation to the Samoa Government and people for their sincere friendship and firm support to the Chinese Government and her people.
“Just as President Xi Jinping pointed out in his meeting with Prime Minister Tuilaepa last week, “Samoa was one of the first Pacific Island countries that established diplomatic relations with China. The Chinese side cherishes the traditional friendship with Samoa and appreciates the country’s firm and long standing adherence to The One China Principle. China will continue supporting Samoa’s efforts to develop the economy and improve people’s livelihoods, and China stands ready to expand practical cooperation with Samoa under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative,” said the acting PM.
