IN a bid to educate teachers on how to identify and report child abuse and neglect cases in schools, a two-day training workshop began in Suva yesterday.
The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation’s child services unit, in partnership with Save the Children, is facilitating the Child Protection of Positive Discipline Training workshop for teachers in the country.
The unit’s assistant director, Ela Tukutukulevu, said the responsibilities and challenges of teaching were immense and teachers often had the responsibility to nurture, support, motivate and impart knowledge to a diverse group of learners with limited resources. She said there were also frustration and the experience of not knowing how to reach particular children.
“There can be moments of helplessness and frustration and of feeling unprepared to face the challenge,” Ms Tukutukulevu said.
She said after the training the teachers would be able effectively manage classroom behaviour.
