Investment Fiji CEO Kamal Chetty says the $600 million Tian Lun Square project was registered with the investment promotion and facilitation agency six years ago and any progress of the Nasese development would depend on the firm meeting all the necessary approvals.

“We will continue to support projects that are sustainable and meet the necessary requirements of our various government departments as well as adheres to the environmental standards,” he said in response to queries from this newspaper.

“The Tian Lun Square project was registered with the agency in 2016 with offshore funding to do the following — real-estate development and integrated resort development.

“The approval for the project was granted based on the Foreign Investment Regulation 2013.

“However, as the project takes place, there are processes that need to be followed with other government bodies.

“The company is currently going through consultation stages in regards to the development of the surrounding environment and we will let the proper processes take its course.

“I am sure that the relevant agencies will be able to reveal whether or not this project is healthy and sustainable for the environment and the people of Fiji, once the necessary procedures are completed from their end.”

Tian Lun came under scrutiny recently amid claims by Fiji Labour Party leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry that a Google search of the company showed “only Investment Fiji (IF) on the screen”.

“Enquiries at IF revealed that they had no contact with the company and had no information on the so-called $600 million proposed development project,” Mr Chaudhry claimed.
