‘Changes to allow more kava exports’

Fijian kava exporters will soon benefit from the recent announcement of the relaxation of export regulations.

Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific Senator Zed Seselja, during his visit at the Blackrock camp in Nadi yesterday, said these changes would mean so much with travel opportunities opening up soon.

“This is in two aspects, we have already changed the rule for personal importation from 2 kilos to 4 kilos,” Mr Seselja said.

“Of course, that doesn’t mean much to people when they have not been travelling. Now with travel opportunities starting to open up, we will better see people importing kava at a personal level up to 4 kilos.

“And the commercial trial from December 1, we expect the regulations to be in place so those who want to import kava on a commercial basis will have the licensing done and they will work through that once those licensing is granted.”

During his traditional welcome in Nadi recently, Mr Seselja said some legislation changes would be made by the Australian Government to allow more kava exports from the Pacific.

He said they would start a commercial trial in December which would allow more kava in Australia which would bring smiles to many Pacific communities there.

The minister, who is in the country for his first official visit, visited the Blackrock Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Camp (Blackrock Camp), the Lautoka Hospital and also had a meeting with the Fiji Airways management before travelling to Suva for the completion of his official tour.
