The delay in the construction of the Savusavu Market is because of changes made to the proposed plan, Local Government Minister Premila Kumar said.

She said the $1 million was set aside for the project.

“There has been a delay because we were liaising with the architect and engineer and there are slight changes to the proposal so they needed additional time,” she said.

“We have called for tender and the bidder has been identified so we’re at the last stage of awarding the tender.

“We have allocated $1m for this project, but we have not released the full amount because the remaining will come in the next financial year as this project will continue into that new financial year.”

Mrs Kumar said it was pointless to release all the funds for the project.

The new market would have space for 183 vendors on the ground floor, a conference room that could cater for 128 seats, council office and small micro enterprises kiosks.
