CHANEL House was crowned the new winner of Saint Thomas High School athletics meet held at the school ground yesterday.
The Green house snatched the top award from last year’s champion Monfort in a tough competition. Both houses scooped 26 gold medals each but Chanel edged the former champion on silver medal count winning 23 silver medals compared with Monfort’s 20.
Monfort though won the boys title while Thomas won the overall girls title but it was Chanel that won the most gold medals in both grades.
School sprint king Sanaila Simeli was named the best male athlete for winning three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4100m relay. Simeli is also tipped as one of the top contenders to take out the Blue Ribbon event in this year’s Coke Zero Fiji Finals.
School teacher Makelesi Mawi said the competition from all houses was tough as the winner was determined in the last events.
She said it was encouraging to see the efforts shown by the athletes and it showed the amount of preparation being made.
“The gold medals were evenly shared and the battle for the top spot was determined in the relays,” said Mawi.
“This shows the commitment made by the students during their preparation.
“The competition was very strong and the rivalries among houses were exciting.”
