Chand on bail

FORMER Fiji National University vice-chancellor Dr Ganesh Chand yesterday appeared before the Suva Magistrates’ Court charged with abuse of office. He was released on a bail bond of $500.
Mr Chand who was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count of abuse of office contrary to section 139 of the Crimes Decree of 2009 appeared before Magistrate Hettiwattege Shageeth Somaratne.
FICAC was represented by Rashmi Aslam and Lilian Mausio. The defendant was represented by Devanesh Sharma and Nancy Choo.
The first phase of disclosures was served on the defence in court by the prosecution.
The particulars of the offence allege that Ganesh Chand while being employed in the public service as the vice-chancellor of the Fiji National University, acted in abuse of the authority of his office, namely approved the payments for overseas medical treatment for the then Minister of Education and the chairman of the Fiji National University Council, Filipe Bole, without the approval of the Fiji National University Council.
As part of his bail condition, he was ordered by the court to surrender all his travel documents to the court registry and not to re-offend.
The case has been adjourned to April 22 for the accused to make his plea.
