THE principal of Nakasi High School today highlighted the need for the Ministry of Education to look into the number of students who enter high school and are non-readers.

Praveen Chand said this was a national issue and the ministry must look into it and keep a database on students who were slow and or non-readers.

Mr Chand said it was sad to see the number of high school students who were illiterate.

In response, Education Ministry Central Divisional education officer Pravin Nath said the ministry had the data and it was working on how best it could rectify the issue.

He said this year, officers from the ministry would be visiting schools to look into how best students who were non-readers could be assisted, and how they could provide relevant resources to various schools.
