ATHLETES at the Coca-Cola Games would need to have performed exceptionally well to force their way into the national athletics squad.
Athletics Fiji executive Albert Miller said the extended squad had already been named and there would be no more inclusions.
“Unless an athlete does remarkably well, say achieve a time or distance that is equivalent or better than the times and distances done by the national athletes, then they could be considered,” Miller said.
Team Fiji chef de mission said for an athlete to get into the squad would mean that they were doing gold medal times and distances.
Athletics Fiji have held four trials this year and all trials had been publicised to allow athletes even those in schools to compete at the trials and earn a spot in Team Fiji.
Athletics selection criteria was very stringent whereby they had set an A and B qualification time and distance. According to Athletics Fiji administrator Joseph Rodan Junior, the times were set to pick only the best to represent Fiji. As many as28 athletes have been named in the shadow squad.
