Cavubati takes a trip down memory lane

FIFTY years ago, Viliame Cavubati enrolled at Queen Victoria School without any knowledge that he would be one of the students to help in the construction of the school’s new chapel during school holidays.

Yesterday, the former Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei cabinet minister shared how proud he was to be back at the school to celebrate the chapel’s golden jubilee celebration with current students and fellow old boys.

“I was enrolled into form three in 1959 — a year after they started building the chapel,” Mr Cavubati said.

“Back then, most students were from the islands so we never went back home during the holidays.

“This was when we assisted the carpenters and those who built the church.”

Mr Cavubati, 69, from Vanuavatu, Lau said he was proud to be back at school yesterday with the old boys and students to witness this occasion.

The chapel, he added meant a lot to the students of Queen Victoria School.

He said they were able to produce some great Fijian leaders and some Fijian Methodist Church ministers.
