When Shaiyad Ali left his home at 2am on Saturday to go fishing, he didn’t imagine he’d haul in the biggest catch of his life.

The 47-year-old panel beater from Navua, who usually fishes as a pastime, caught a kavu in Pacific Harbour.

He said he had to use every technique he had learnt just to reel in the massive fish.

“I’ve been fishing since I was very young. It’s a hobby, but this is the biggest catch of my life,” he said.

“I used a bit of technique, but I had to haul it in my boat somehow. I thought to myself that I just had to get it in the boat.

“I had to put my hand in its mouth to tie the rope and then, with great difficulty, I pulled it in the boat because I was alone.”

He said the fish weighed over 100 kilograms.

He decided to sell it to one of his friends in Navua for about $700.
