Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) is requesting drivers to exercise caution while driving.

EFL chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel said this in a media release that explained an unplanned power outage on Saturday which happened after a car hit a power pole at Namelimeli along the Queens Rd yesterday.

The pole collapsed and de-energised a 33,000V sub-transmission line which supplied power to the Deuba zone substation serving the greater Navua, Pacific Harbour and Deuba areas right up to Matanipusi Hill in Serua.

Mr Patel said teams were dispatched to attend to this fault which required the replacement of the pole and EFL was able to supply electricity to some affected customers from the Deuba power station. The replacement work was completed late afternoon and the repair works were carried out in persistent rain.

“This is also a major safety issue for the drivers as they could be severely affected by the electrical currents,” he said.

Mr Patel said EFL would take appropriate action to recover repair costs associated with damages to EFL assets, as well as report the same to relevant authorities for investigation and appropriate action.
