CANEGROWERS have asked for 120 more Vanuatu nationals to be engaged in cane-harvesting next year.

This, according to a press statement issued by Sugar Ministry permanent secretary Yogesh Karan over the weekend.

While visiting the 19 Vanuatu cane-cutters who are cutting cane in Balevuto, Ba, on Saturday, he said labour shortage in the industry continued to be a major setback and their efforts would help boost harvest efforts.

Mr Karan said the Vanuatu labourers would work on the farms during the non-harvesting seasons.

He said the Ministry of Sugar Industry had advised the Fiji Sugar Corporation to advertise the need for cane cutters earlier this year, however, there was hardly any response despite numerous attempts to recruit cutters.
