Cane payout topped up

GOVERNMENT has topped up the final cane payment for the 2015 season crop.

The Sugar Industry Tribunal issued a statement yesterday saying growers were scheduled to receive a fifth cane payment of 72cents per tonne of cane.

Registrar of the Tribunal Tim Brown said an additional top up of $1.38 per tonne meant that growers would receive $2.10 per tonne of cane.

Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Sundresh Chetty said this was good news for all growers.

“If the growers would have received the scheduled cane payment of 72cents, the total payment for the 2015 season would have been $74.28 per tonne,” he said.

“Thanks to Government, growers will now receive $2.10 per tonne and this brings the total cane payment for the 2015 season to $75.66 per tonne.

“This is very timely, especially in light of the fact that many growers are preparing to celebrate Diwali this weekend.”

Mr Chetty said Government’s top up of $1.38 per tonne for the 1.84 million tonnes produced last season meant an investment of $2.5 million.

The fifth payment is traditionally paid out at the end of this month.
