MAJORITY of the callers who seek assistance from Lifeline Fiji through their helpline are between the ages of 15 to 28 years old.
Revealing this, Lifeline Fiji officer-in-charge Jeremaia Merekula said the issues faced by these callers varied.
He said the youngest caller that contacted their helpline last year was an 11-year-old.
“Most of them have relationships breakdowns, financial constraints, fights with friends and break ups,” he said.
“If a seven year old has completed suicide which is the youngest victim in Fiji so we here at Lifeline say that suicide varies and it can happen to anyone.” Lifeline Fiji received about 2000 calls in 2018.
“This was due to lack of funds we were not able to do much of our awareness and outreach programs and also to advertise more on our crisis line,” he said.
“Thankfully, we have Medical Services Pacific with the child help lineup the road and also the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre were operating a domestic violence helpline, we currently work together with the domestic violence helpline and the child helpline because they would get assisted for them,” he added.
