Call to protect our elderly

WE need to protect our old people says Director for Social Welfare Rupeni Fatiaki.

He highlighted this during the World Elder Abuse Awareness day at the HART office in Valelevu today.

He said people need to speak up and report to the relevant authorities if an elder persons was being abused in their communities.

“This is not the time to cover up, you need to speak out and let us know if an elder person is being abused,” he said.

“You and I know elderly abuse is happening in our country right now but we need to report it.”

He said the younger generation need to know that it was now their time to look after the elderly.

“Some people cannot look after elderly persons within their families, but its their responsibility yet the elderly are still being neglected,” he said.

Mr Fatiaki this issue cannot be solved solely by the department.

“We need to work together in order to solve this issue, everyone has a responsibility to address this we need everyone to work together to address this,” he said.
