THE Ministry of Health and Medical Services should ensure essential equipment is provided to protect medical practitioners from diseases are available in health facilities.

This comes after the declaration of an outbreak of the deadly meningococcal disease last Tuesday.

Fiji Nursing Association general secretary Salanieta Matiavi in response to questions by this newspaper said the Health Ministry should create more preventative measures in this regard.

“The Ministry of Health and Medical Services should be doing a lot of awareness on preventative measures to make people aware,” she said.

“More use of television, radio other social media as for preventative measures.”

Mrs Matiavi said the MoH should be prepared and at least have enough or stock up standard personal protective equipment (PPE).

“I am not sure, but this is essential items and should be available every time and everywhere to be able to protect the individuals during this time,” Mrs Matiavi said.

She urged nurses to use standard PPE while at work.

“Standard personal protective equipment should be available in every workplace.

“They need to take extra precaution during this outbreak to prevent them from getting infected,” she said.
