THE call by religious organisations to be allowed to appoint one of their own faith as heads of schools owned and managed by them is perfectly legitimate and reasonable, says the Fiji Labour Party.

Party leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry said it was no different from the shareholders of a company deciding who should sit on its board of directors.

“The schools run by these organisations are not for profit,” he said.

“They have, over the years, invested heavily in the education infrastructure to provide invaluable service to the nation which, in reality, was the responsibility of the State.”
