Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong has called for patience and understanding for people who are unable to visit loved ones admitted at the Labasa Hospital.

He said they needed to bear with and adhere to COVID-safe policies put in place by the ministry.

Dr Fong said when the borders opened on Vanua Levu, patient visits at the hospital were restricted in the interest of safety.

“After we opened the borders, we assumed that COVID is in the North, thus the protocols,” he said.

Faizal Ali, a Labasa resident whose wife was admitted at the hospital, complained that his family had not seen his wife for the past two weeks.

“We don’t know how she’s doing because we haven’t seen but only spoken to her on the phone,” he said.

“We can’t visit her in the hospital because they have stopped family members from visiting their loved ones in hospital.

“So far, we are not affected by COVID in Labasa but they have stopped us from visiting our relatives in hospital and they should change this.”

In response, Dr Fong said the protocol would remain.
