Works at the Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori is not complete yet, Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar said while speaking during the opening of the 143rd Girmit carnival in Nausori .

She said other pavilions at the park needed to be fixed.

She said the park was closed due to damage caused by tropical cyclones Yasa and Ana, and also due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The park was closed since December 2020 and the Nausori Town Council had to prioritise and pull out some funds to repair pavilion A at a cost of $200,000 and today (last Saturday) Ratu Cakobau Park reopened with the Fiji rugby Union’s Skipper Cup games,” she said.

“And we have not completed all the works at Ratu Cakobau Park, we still need to fix other pavilion and in the last revised budget, the Ministry of Economy is providing funds to Nausori Town Council to repair the other pavilion so that our Ratu Cakobau Park can hold more games with full capacity.”

She said there was a need to maintain Ratu Cakobau Park as it played a key role in the lives of people in Nausori.

“Ratu Cakobau Park is a landmark for Nausori and it has a lot of sentimental value for people who live in Nausori and for that reason, we have to restore the Ratu Cakobau Park so that everyone can enjoy sports in that arena.”
