Bakewell Cakes had to limit their production because of the pandemic which has resulted in the temporary closure of one of their shops in Laucala Beach.

According to the managing director Rohit Deo, the business has faced issues with shortage of ingredients such as sugar.

“Since our Laucala Beach branch is closed we are just surviving on the Samabula branch which is open,” he said. “We are greatly affected regarding ingredients — shortage of sugars and etc.

“Customer flow is also very limited at the moment since they are a bit cautious of traveling.”

Mr Deo said they had regularly carried out max production but had to cut it into half or lesser than that to maintain freshness every day as the customer flow was slow.

“So just to maintain our freshness we have cut our production into half which is also a loss because the production cost is more than what we make, so we are just rolling at the moment.”

He said they would get a mix of orders from customers for birthdays, events and occasions such as World Food Day.

“Our employees that are working they are good in their profession and at the same time we have to consider their wages too.”

Mr Deo said they had not reduced pay for their staff however as a result of the curfew their working hours had been slightly reduced.

“Before we used to operate from 7am to 7pm for seven days but right now we are operating from 7 am to 5am considering the curfew hours.

“And the other thing is mostly on weekends we are quite busy but right now because of the reduced hours that to has been affected. “Like on Sundays we were open from 7am to 6pm but right now we close at 2pm or 3pm.

“This Sunday we were out of stock by 11 am because of our limited production so we are baking on predictions,” he said. He added they did not want to overload their stocks.

“We try to maintain freshness at the same time as well so we just maintain that amount of stock.

“Our type of business is very different we have to maintain our freshness at every time.”

He said they could not over stock their ingredients in case of situation where by they are not able to use it.

Mr Deo said they were still paying the same amount of rent at the moment and there was no support provided.

Bakewell Cakes is currently carrying out free deliveries to certain areas.
