The players are “owning up” to their disappointing loss against the Highlanders last Saturday.
This was highlighted by Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Mick Byrne during a media conference yesterday.
The Dunedin-based side ran in nine tries, while the Drua in comparison only managed to score four tries with the Highlanders winning the match 57-24.
“The boys were really disappointed regarding the match and they carried a lot of maybe that frustration from the game into the training yesterday (Tuesday) and it was evident in the training,” he said.
Bryne added that at times it was action that spoke louder than words and it was shown in their trainings this week.
“We talked about it as a team. I believe they have taken ownership because yesterday’s training was fast, physical, brutal and a lot of energy on display.
“I think for me as a coach to know, whether they owning up, it is showing in their actions.
“Yesterday, we probably had the hardest training session in two weeks which was pleasing to see because it means our boys really loved the physicality.
“There was a buzz around the place after training and we want to build from that, and as a coach that is all you can really do – prepare your team for what is ahead.”
He said the team’s visit to the Seventh Heaven Fiji in the Mamanuca Group was something the boys had earned.
“I think it was something important for us, especially when we are on the road for two weeks. It was our first trip of the year and it was an opportunity to bring all the squad together and have a relaxing afternoon with their friends,” Bryne said.
