AS long as the black market is available in the country, the offences related to properties like theft, unlawful home invasions and robberies are going to flourish.
This was the comment of Nausori Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne when sentencing Nausori Businessman, Ajay Shashikant Pala to 26 months imprisonment earlier this afternoon.
The courts found him guilty for one count of receiving stolen items.
The 45-year-old man is operating a jewellery shop in Nausori.
Magistrate Somaratne said Pala dishonestly obtained stolen jewelleries valued at $52,900 between November 30, 2013, and February 8, 2014, in Nausori.
He adds that the evidence showed that one Delana was stealing from the complainant’s house and Pala was encouraging him to get more gold jewelleries from that place.
“Even though the monetary value can be replaced with time, these items can’t be recovered as you have melted them for your business,” said Magistrate Somaratne.
A non-parole period of 20 months has been set.
