Fijian Police made an early morning arrest yesterday of a man who had broken into a supermarket in Nasinu and tried to avoid his identity from the CCTV cameras by using an umbrella.

Police said a report was received after 5am on Sunday from the supermarket manager regarding a burglary case they were viewing via their live CCTV feed.

It said the person was allegedly seen moving around inside the shop with an umbrella stealing items.

Chief Operations Officer ACP Abdul Khan said a fire call was conducted at the Valelevu Police Station whereby officers residing at the barracks and officers on duty were deployed to the supermarket complex.

“The officers surrounded the building whereby one officer climbed onto the roof of the adjacent building and noticed where the suspect had allegedly gained entry into the supermarket,” ACP Khan said.

“The suspect, after hearing the officers outside, allegedly tried to escape through where he had gained access, but was arrested by the officer who was waiting at the same point.”

He said the suspect was being questioned as investigations continued.
