The chief executive officer of the Fiji Football Association, Mohammed Yusuf, has confirmed the Digicel national football team had locked in three friendly matches against top A-League opposition next month in Australia.

Yusuf said the three fixtures would serve as crucial preparation for the Bula Boys ahead of the 2022 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) World Cup qualifiers from late March 14-30 in Qatar.

“We’re determined to have the Bula Boys playing some quality opponents before the important OFC world cup qualifiers,” Yusuf said.

“It’s a major breakthrough after the postponement of two international matches against the Malaysian national football team that was earmarked for late January in Suva.

“The three A-League franchises have shown a willingness to play against the Bula Boys.

“We’re going to pick the strongest squad we possibly can for the three friendlies and will enable the players to better understand each other’s roles in the national team as we prepare for the important tourney in Qatar.

“The three A-League teams are going to prove a real challenge for the national football team, there’s no doubt about it.

“We had worked hard to get the matches for the Bula Boys.”

Yusuf said the plan was to fly the team over to Melbourne, Australia by the third week of next month to play against the three franchises.

“The team will play against Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City and Western United respectively. We will announce the dates and actual kick-off times for the three matches in due course.

“The friendlies will enable the players to better understand each other’s roles in the national team as we prepare for the important tourney in Qatar.”
