EIGHT businesses and two residences were destroyed yesterday after a fire engulfed three buildings in Rakiraki Town.
National Fire Authority (NFA) officers from Rakiraki, Tavua and Ba took about five hours to control the inferno from spreading to nearby outlets.
The fire is believed to have started from a restaurant owned by A. Gafoor.
Director Azmat Ali said 10 members of his extended family lost all their belongings. Owner of one of the buildings that was destroyed, George Shiu Raj, said his property wasn’t insured.
“I had six businesses in that building and all have gone up in flames,” he said.
The NFA and police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
