Fishermen found

The New Zealand Defence Force says two missing Kiribati fishermen were found 300 kilometres from the atoll they set off from. Air Commodore Andrew Clark said the crew of an Air Force Orion spotted the two men waving from their small aluminium boat about 9.30pm on Monday, on the third day of their search.

Warship wreck discovered

The discovery of the wreck of the USS Juneau off Solomon Islands has been described as hugely significant. The light cruiser was sunk by a torpedo on Friday November 13, 1942, during the Battle of Guadalcanal, with all but 10 of the 687 crew losing their lives.

Man arrested for FB post

Police in Papua New Guinea have arrested a man over a posting on social media. Livingstone Fontenu from Eastern Highlands Province, who’s 25, has been charged with spreading false and misleading information under the Summary Offences Act. Police said the complaint was filed by the province’s Governor Peter Numu.

Electoral law change approved

The French National Assembly has approved a change to the electoral law for New Caledonia for this year’s independence referendum. The change was approved by 537 to two votes, a month after the Senate overwhelmingly voted for it. The referendum will be held on November 4.
