New diplomat

Vanuatu has appointed John Licht as its new ambassador to the European Union and Belgium. Mr Licht officially signed his contract at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, according to the Daily Post.

Bar licence

A Samoan MP and bar owner Olo Fiti Va’ai is suing the Liquor Board for $US390,000 ($F795,000) after his bar licence was revoked. The Blacknose Bar was closed last August after the Board investigated an incident where a security guard for the bar assaulted a customer.

MP charged

Niue Cabinet minister, Billy Talagi, has been charged with assaulting fellow MP Terry Coe. Mr Coe had complained to police that Mr Talagi, who is the Justice, Health and Education Minister, punched him in the face after a heated debate in parliament.

Dengue alert

Tonga has recorded 124 cases of dengue since the beginning of the year. Supervising Public Health Inspector, Sela Fa’u, said despite the numbers being on the rise, admissions to the health centres and the hospital were falling.

5.8 earthquake

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near the capital of Solomon Islands this morning. According to the US Geological Survery, the quake struck 42 kilometres west of Honiara, shortly before 6 o’clock this morning local time.

Papua election

Thousands of voters in Papua have yet to have their identities registered under electronic identification which could strip them of their voting rights in the upcoming elections. The Jakarta Post reported acting Papua Governor Sudarmo saying he had asked the Papua Social Affairs and Civil Registry Agency to speed up the e-ID registration of more than 600,000 voters.
