MEXICO CITY – Former Mexican president Vicente Fox proposed on Wednesday the legalisation of opium poppy production as a way to help end bloody turf battles fought by drug cartels in various parts of the country. Mr Fox served as president from 2000-2006 with the centre-right National Action Party but has since distanced himself from the party.

DHAKA/GENEVA – The United Nations refugee agency is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh laying out a framework for the voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, an agency spokesman said on Wednesday.

OTTAWA/VANCOUVER – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to pile pressure on British Columbia’s provincial government to drop its resistance to a pipeline project, but will try to avoid tougher measures that might alienate voters who helped his Liberals win power, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.
