Cocaine arrests

BUENOS AIRES – Six suspected drug traffickers were arrested after 389kg (858 pounds) of cocaine were found in the Russian embassy in Buenos Aires.

The investigation started in 2016, when the Russian ambassador to Argentina called local authorities to report that traffickers were trying to move 16 bags of cocaine from the Buenos Aires embassy by way of a diplomatic flight.

Officer dead

MADRID – A police officer died on Thursday in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao in clashes with Spartak Moscow fans ahead of a Europa League soccer game against Athletic Bilbao. The police officer died in hospital, where he had been taken after a heart attack when the regional Basque Country police force Ertzaintza was trying to stop street battles between supporters of the two teams.

Refugees killed

KIGALI – A number of Congolese refugees were killed in clashes with Rwandan police on Thursday as officers dispersed a protest at a UN office against a cut in camp rations.

Officers fired tear gas at the group of about 3000 protesters who were pelting them with stones and pieces of metal.

Diesel ban

LEIPZIG – A German court has delayed a ruling on whether major cities can ban heavily polluting diesel cars, which could hit the resale value of up to 15 million vehicles in Europe’s largest car market and force automakers to pay for costly modifications.
