VILLAGERS in Lomawai and Emuri in Nadroga were left stranded today after bridges near communities disappeared under flood waters.

Emuri villager Sakiusa Qautoka said their village was inaccessible since yesterday.

“There wasn’t a lot of rain here but there’s a lot of rain further uphill which is why bridges downstream are getting flooded,” Mr Qautoka said.

Other villages that experienced increasing river levels were Navutu, Semo and Kabisi.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Services, a heavy rain warning remains in force for Lau and Lomaiviti group and Viti Levu.

An active trough of low pressure with cloud and rain affects the group and is expected to affect the country until next week.

The weather office has warned that the heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding of low lying areas.
